DMCA changes sought

Wired reported yesterday that several groups of people are asking the government to change the wording of certain portions of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act to make what they want to do legal.

“No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.” is the specific part of the law being dealt with now.

The first one mentioned is one most people can agree with, The American Foundation for the Blind wants to renew the legality of hacking e-books so they can be read aloud with software (like Microsoft’s SAM included on copies of Windows XP).

Other proposed changes include being able to defeat encryption on streamed web videos to unlocking a smartphone to run Firefox on it.

DMCA changes.
