One thing Japan does better

In the United States if a famous singer/actor gets arrested for having drugs or whatever, their album sales go up. This sends the message that drugs are cool.

In Japan if a singer/actor is arrested for having drugs or whatever, their studio/record label kicks them out and any CD or movies they have released are pulled from the shelves. Needless to say, their life is ruined.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been following Anime News Network and J-List’s coverage of the Noriko Sakai story. Her husband was arrested for possession of drugs and feared that Noriko would “do something unthinkable” at this news.

She turned herself in and agreed to a drug test early last month. Recently the news was reported: A urine sample turned up clean, but a hair sample showed traces of amphetamines.

Her record label promptly dumped her from its list of artists and her albums were removed from store shelves.
