WIPO Magazine August 2009

It’s that time again!

The latest issue of WIPO Magazine hits mailboxes this month. This month’s issue straight from Geneva highlights the deal Google has made with book publishers and the Madrid System of registering trademarks has one million marks registered.

In other news, FIFA combats those who would infringe its trademarks and are your Tweets copyrighted?

That last one threw me for a surprise, but then I realized it’s so obvious. For the most part, your Tweets can’t be copyrighted because they’re not novel enough to warrant protection.

The sentence, “I’m having dinner” or other similar arrangements have most likely been uttered on Twitter and elsewhere many times. However, something like, this would be “I had an old friend for dinner, I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.” would most likely be eligible for copyright protection, assuming your name is Hannibal Lecter.
